21th Annual Greater Toronto Area Schools Orienteering Invitational

Notes by Tom Hamblin, Meet Director:

Were we lucky with the weather, or what? That was the one warm, dry day of the week! Of course orienteering is an all-weather sport, so we would have been there even it was pouring rain. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for next year.
My personal thanks go to Don Ross, the course setter, Robert Walsh, the meet director, to the teachers and coaches who helped with the start and the marshalling, and to the gang from the Toronto Orienteering Club and the Ukranian Orienteering Club who took a day off work to make this meet possible.
There were a number of DNFs (Did Not Finish) and DSQs (Disqualified for punching a wrong control) this year. Orienteering is a technical sport and it takes some experience to learn how to do it. We encourage you all to come to some of the Wednesday evening meets next year ahead of the School Meet to get that needed practice. But in any case, it was a nice day to be out of school and enjoying nature!
If you are reading these results, you have found the Toronto Orienteering Club website. You can see that we have a full schedule of events over the summer and into the fall and winter in conjunction with other orienteering clubs in Ontario. If you really liked your orienteering experience, suggest to your parents that you come out as a family to a meet and you can show them how to orienteer (we can help instruct as well). This is a lifetime sport and you might find that your parents actually like orienteering. We have members from about 8 to 75 years of age.
In response to your suggestions, we are going to split the age categories for the school trophy in 2003. There will be a new school trophy for ages 11 to 14 in addition to the original trophy which will now be for ages 15 to 19 years. There will be two keeper plaques as well. We think that will heighten interest and even up the school-to-school competition.
And most importantly, I promise that the meet flyer for 2003 will be on time so that we will have a larger turnout! This year the final count was 8 schools, 82 entries and 167 students.
