Just like last year , we were lucky with the weather! That was the first warm, dry day of the week! Of course orienteering is an all-weather sport, so we would have been there even it was pouring rain. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for next year.
My personal thanks go to Don Ross, the course setter, Robert Walsh, our meet director and registrar, to the teachers and coaches who helped with the marshalling, and to the gang from the Toronto Orienteering Club and the Ukrainian Orienteering Club who took a day off work to make this meet possible.
There were a number of entries that did not successfully complete the course this year. Orienteering is a technical sport and it takes some experience to learn how to do it. We encourage you all to come to some of the Wednesday evening meets next year ahead of the School Meet to get that needed practice. But in any case, it was a nice day to be out of school and enjoying nature!
If you are reading these results, you have found the Toronto Orienteering Club website. You can see that we have a full schedule of events over the summer and into the fall and winter in conjunction with other orienteering clubs in Ontario. If you really liked your orienteering experience, suggest to your parents that you come out as a family to a meet and you can show them how to orienteer (we can help instruct as well). This is a lifetime sport and you might find that your parents actually like orienteering. We have members from about 8 to 75 years of age.
This year, in response to your suggestion, we had two school trophies. The 11-14 trophy donated by the Toronto Orienteering Club was won decisively by Chedoke Middle School of Hamilton. The original Silva Trophy, renamed the 15-19 Silva trophy, was won by Westmount Secondary School of Hamilton. Our congratulations to both schools. We look forward to a renewed competition next year and we hope a calmer situation in the schools that will permit a larger attendance.
