The Why Just Run the Islands course was a modified form of an orienteering race called a Score-O. In a Score-O race, runners are given a set time limit to punch as many checkpoints as possible and return to the finish. Each checkpoint has a point value, typically based on the checkpoint's difficulty. Finishing over the time limit usually costs the runner large penalties, so competitors choose their route carefully and keep a close eye on their time. In this WJR event, we used a Score-O format with a twist: the point value of each checkpoint depended on the order in which the point was punched. With millions of possible routes, the complexity of the course quickly became obvious to the runners. The participants in the first ever Why Just Run event were given 90 minutes to maximize their score. Think you can beat our winners? The points grid has been reproduced below, as well as a online map of the course. You'll also find a chart of the actual distances of the typical routes between points. You could just run for it and hope for the best, but Why Just Run, when you can have an adventure!
