'"Master, where is checkpoint 9?"'
'"Do not try to find checkpoint 9; that's impossible. Only try to realize the truth."'
'"The truth?"'
'"There is no checkpoint 9."'

Okay, okay, despite an avoidable unfortunate circumstance with one control being slightly out of place [MJ's fault! ~ Ed.], the 2011 Turkey Trot weekend was a great success! Beautiful weather, handsome race directors, happy racers - orienteering just doesn't get any better.

TOC and UKR would like to offer their congratulations and sincere thanks to all the patient and competitive participants who made our weekend such an outdoor pleasure. It would have been a good deal less fun without you. Nobody likes to wait so, without further ado, we offer the results for your painstaking analysis.

September 6, 2011 - Wow, who turned off the summer switch? It's amazing what a difference a Labour Day Weekend can make in the weather. How did you spend the last long weekend of the summer? We spent it outside, giddily preparing for Turkey Trot 2011! Registration is open really for real now, and there have been some small changes made to the classes. Check out the registration page for the details, which will also conveniently (and not coincedentally) hook you up with some online registration love too.

August 30, 2011 - Itching to get your O on? Registration for the annual, anticipated, and adventurous Turkey Trot is now open! Register quick before all the fun is spoken for!

August 14, 2011 - The second (and also first) event of this year's Why Just Run series enjoyed a gorgeous summer day yesterday. The weather couldn't have been better for the running-paddling adventure on Centre Island, and there were a lot of happy, albeit puzzled, faces crossing the finish line. As familiar as we are with the Islands, seeing Toronto's iconic park from the water is a new treat. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the event's co-sponsor, the Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak Club, and to the organizers, Alison, Gui, Michael, and Stephanie, for a great day.

Especially amazing is that even with all this 2011 we've already enjoyed, there are still months of good fun to be had, brought to you by your trusty TOC. Just for example, the Wednesday Evening Park Series still has a few weeks of wheee to go. This week's practice meet will be held in Morningside Park and hosted by Mj. Come on out and show us your O-face!

Our next big ticket item is the Turkey Trot, coming up the weekend of September 17 and 18. While it never actually involves a Turkey, and only rarely actual Trotting, this oddly monikered event co-hosted by TOC and the Ukrainian Club is still 2 solid days of multi-distance quality orienteering. The registration pages will be opening soon, but mark your calendar today. You don't want to miss this one!

Then, just when you think you can't stand any more fun, Why Just Run will bring you it's capstone event in a brand new and socially responsible format: on public transit. October 15th is the date for that one, so you'll have lots of time to pick out your good bus clothes.

July 10, 2011 - Hot enough for you? With that obnoxious out of the way, we bid you welcome to a muggy Toronto summer. Don't let the heat put you off playing hard though. The Wednesday Night Park Series is going strong and happily included with your club membership. This week's good times are brought to you by Frank and Ann in their neighbourhood Bestview Park. See you there!

The heat seems to have addled all our heads, leaving us with too short a schedule to put together the Why Just Run event in Albion Hills on July 16. So the July 16 event is off, although we may restage it in the fall if there's enough interest. We feel your disappointment as keenly as our own, but no worries, because August 13 on (and around) Centre Island is still a go! We're looking forward to mixing a little water with our sport, and to seeing you there. Sign up today!

June 12, 2011 - Holy potato salad, Batman! Do we give some good Champs, or what? The TOC Champs, 2011 version, ran efficiently and festively on Saturday, at Greenwood Conservation Area. Hosts Vicky and David Bondy served up a bucket of fun in the woods and capped it with a barbecue of stomach-pleasing proportions. I daresay we'll do it again next year. Of course, per tradition, that event will be organized by this year's winners!

Who won? Funny you should ask; we just happen to have results right here.

You might as well know - because we want you to come - that the Why Just Run? series is on again. Yes, against all better judgement, we are once again going to combine fun, orienteering, fun, puzzles, and fun into a special summer experience.

As befits our chronically experimental WJR event, this season we want to see you turn up wearing something other than your tired old sneaker and running pants. How about, oh I don't know, biking shoes, or a personal flotation device? Intrigued? We are, and we even know what's coming. Do yourself a favour: mark July 16 in your calendar for starters and hit the link!

May 29, 2011 - Believe it or not, somewhere underneath all this water-from-the-sky, there is a summer. Keep your spirits (and umbrellas) up, because once the waters recede we are here to help you cram the season full of the best kind of adventure. The kind where you're not really sure where you are, but figure it's best to just keep heading, you know, this way, because you're sure the map will start making sense if you just go another 50 metres or so. This time you're really sure.

Coming up next, on our big board of fun, and included free with your 2011 TOC membership, is the ominously and inaccurately named TOC Champs! On Saturday June 11, the TOC is hosting its annual fun and mildly competitive event, complete with pot-luck social. This TOC signature event is being organized this year by the lovely Vicki Bondy and her talented sidekick David. Bring the family, a salad, and a dessert, or some combination thereof.

More details and online registration can be found on the event page.

March 27, 2011 - Online registration is now open for the TOC Mob Match on April 17th! This is the first event on our newest urban park map, L'Amoreaux Park. A combination of a Score-O and a Classic point to point, this Easter themed event is ideal for beginners, families and youth groups. Best of all, it is included free with your 2011 TOC membership!

For complete details and online registration, check out the event webpage here!

March 3, 2011 - It seems as if Old Man Winter may be on his last legs, but he's not down just yet. We were revelling in the frosty joys of the season at Thomass #6, just this past Sunday! The latest installment was held at Dumfries Conservation Area (yes, we had to look it up too), hosted by the Stars Orienteering Club. Michael Lucente's course was fast and challenging, with the sheer number of checkpoints in the limited space demanding careful racing. More than a few good runners fell victim to mispunching a nearby control 'cause, you know, it was in the right area.

But that's all behind us now. It's time to lace up your good sneaks and give the big-mittened middle finger to winter. The Mob Match is coming and we're going for a run!

The TOC season schedule has been posted. Some location details remain to be determined, but the dates are up, so you can mark your calendars. We've also finalized the dates for a number of beginner clinics, and are in the process of determining the best date for an advanced clinic. Whether you're new to orienteering and want to learn the basics, or are ready to polish your mad o-skillz, TOC can show the way.

February 8, 2011 - The Thomass series has 3 more events to go, and we want to see more TOCers out there struggling through thigh deep snow for club and glory! The lovely and talented UKR club is hosting this Sunday's festivities in the York Region Forest. Bring a friend, bring a mug, and bring your warm mitts!
January 10, 2011 - Hey, good news: our online membership registration link has been updated. Join or renew today! See the membership page for details on the best deal in sport you'll find this year. Everyone that has registered for the event will be issued a full refund. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

September 30, 2010 - Results from last weekend's Turkey Trot are now available on our results page. Congratulations to Elena Logvina of GHO and Robbie Anderson of OOC for winning the cash prizes of $100.00 each as the top elite athletes over the two days!

All OOA club members are invited to bring along a friend new to orienteering to run with them for free! Complete details and online registration are available on the event page.

June 21, 2010 - The results for the Why Just Run event at Morningside Park are now available on our website at www.whyjustrun.com. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone that completed their first orienteering event! Yuestas David took some great photos at the event and they will also be available on our website shortly.

May 31, 2010 - There are only 4 days until the TOC's Summer Training camp begins! As you know, our permit allows only 25 participants and there are only 6 available spots left! Right now there are 8 members of COF's High Performance Program attending along with members of the GHO, Stars, OOC and TOC clubs.

Ognyan Dimitrov, Ralph Lindzon and Clive Hayhow finished 7th. Malcolm Goddard and Emory Baird also had strong runs but a mishap at the map exchange eliminated their team from contention.

June 15, 2009

So another TOC Champs has come and gone. Those looking for some bush this weekend certainly found it up on the Escarpment! The summer undergrowth added an additional layer of challenge to Mj's busy score-o courses. Pairs of racers had 2 hours total to tackle 2 separate courses. The rules were simple: each runner ran a different course, then met up with their partner to exchange maps and run the other. Total points were based on the controls that both runners punched. The team earned no points for controls that only one teammate reached. A little teamwork, a little strategy, and a lot of fun!

Some runners data was not downloaded after the first or second legs and we're recovering that data manually from the SI bricks. To whet your appetite, we have the preliminary results here, by individual runner, and will have the team results up shortly. Stay tuned for an official announcement of our individual TOC Champs and our team winners!

We'd like to thank the event team for pulling it all together, and arranging the lovely weather for us besides: Clive, Mj, Alex, Alison, Erin, Rob and Katrin.

June 10, 2009

IMPORTANT UPDATE:The Friday and Saturday Nav-Stock events have been cancelled. We are understandly disappointed, but the TOC Champs are still eager to please. Details, irreverance, and ill-concealed innuendo on the event page. Sign up ASAP to reserve your map and your spot in the barbeque line!

Speaking of, it is a pot luck, so don't forget to bring your fave salad, dessert, snack or fondue! You can't live on barbeque alone! [Editor's note: Yes, actually, you can, but humour us and bring something.]

May 25, 2009

Not to distract you from the inaugural Why Just Run? race taking place on June 6, but we want to draw your attention to the upcoming Nav-Stock Weekend o' O-Love. The wonderfully libertarian Nav-Stock event is two solid days (and nights) of outdoor fun: orienteering, camping, burning perfectly good food. We are also understandably, palpably excited for the TOC Champs, just one part of Nav-Stock's shameless offerings. New for this year, the Champs will be a pairs event, for twice the fun! We're also encouraging threesomes, foursomes and orgiastic consumption on a Roman scale. Dig the event page for more tongue, more cheek, and more details!

May 18, 2009
