TORONTO ORIENTEERING CLUB -- Adventure Running!

TOCers who have been around orienteering long enough may remember the magazine Orienteering North America that used to be published by Larry and Sarah-Mae Berman of Cambridge, Mass. By my memory of it, the most useful features in the ONA were the Meet schedule that they compiled regulary for all of the continent and a little “photo orienteering” contest on orienteering maps that regularly appeared as an insert in the magazine. The Club, COF & USOF webpages on the Internet have largely supplanted the meet schedule but the Photo-O contest is a regrettable loss.

Last winter, David Bondy reminded me of the Photo-O’s and I resolved to compose one for TOC’ers and whoever else may be interested. The result is on the following pages. It is not as hard as the ONA’s, my wife Ruth did it under an hour, whereas ONA’s tended to be mind-bendingly difficult.

Each of 11 photos shows control locations on the course below. It is a very short course but at an elite level. A copy of the map is on the last page. The task is to find where each control is located on the map. When you think you have the answers, or as many as you can get, send a marked-up copy to the Tiosio Times editor or the author, golgeo@sympatico.ca , and we will publish the winners in the next issue. Practically I’d suggest printing the map and looking at the photos on-screen. Every detail could help; some are hard and some are easy and the inter-control distances could be a key help for the hard ones. The map is not precisely the 2003 Blueberry A-Meet map. There are some changes in water features (beavers!). Also, with one exception, the controls have not been used in recent history, so no-one is likely to have an advantage.
